Prior to building Coot’s Lake , Coolidge “Coot” Hulsey, Sr. built and ran a smaller swimming pond in Braswell, Ga. “Coot’s Place” with cool spring fed water and grassy slopes at Braswell, was started on their family’s original home place around 1925. It was open to the public until the family started construction for a new recreation and swimming lake in the early 1950’s, about 5 miles from the original, in Rockmart.
Lake Coolidge, now more popularly known as “Coot’s Lake” was built when Coot , Sr. took a portion of family land he inherited and started the construction of a concrete and an earthen dam with complex valve systems in the 50’s. Construction on the lake continued into 1960 to dam a portion of Hills Creek and two natural springs. The dam blocked off the creek enough to turn what was once their farmland for cotton and corn into an 11 acre upper lake and a 25 acre lower lake. He and his wife Lillie Mae then opened the lower lake, called “Lake Coolidge” for business in summer of 1961. Coot’s Lake has become a landmark over the years for east Polk County. Many families continue to visit since their parents brought them on opening day in 1961, now sharing their summer tradition with their grandchildren. Coot’s Lake is currently maintained and operated by the 2nd and 3rd generations of the Hulsey family, Coot, Jr. , his wife Patty , and their grown children.
